TANZANIA

ZANZIBAR THE SPICE ISLAND

Zanzibar is also know as the Spice Island. One has to experience Zanzibar through all one’s senses to understandy why so many passing travellers extend their stay and sometimes never leave. It’s the narrow alleyways of stone town, the colours of the market, the old buildings and the aroma os spices that envelops you. Zanzibar has a rish history with many invasions through the centuries. In the middle of the 19th century under the Omani Arabs the Island was the most important trading port on the East Coast of Africa.

The stone town of Zanzibar is a fascinating warren of narrow streets, overhanging balconies and huge intricately carved doors. The bustling Suk (bazaar) where traders frantically bargain, is full of the pungent perfume of exotic spices.

The North and East Coast of Zanzibar, some 30km from Stone Town has beautiful unspoiled beaches. This area is ideal for water sports such as angling, snorkeling and sailing. The north coast is also well set up for scuba diving.

Note: Zanzibar is very much a part of Africa . Haggling over prices is a way of life - prices are often inflated for tourists. Accommodation in Zanzibar is very basic compared to Southern Africa. Bathrooms have only showers and not baths.

You will be collected from your hotel and will be familiarised with the Town with its white washed buildings, teak doors, antique shops and markets. A stop is made at the Central Market opened in 1904. Fresh produce from the Island can be bought here. The fish auction is interesting. The tour then proceeds to the Zanzibar Museum opened in 1925, where relics and documents of Sultans and early explorers including Dr Livingstone’s medicine chest are preserved. The site of the famous slave market where the Anglican Church of Christ stands is the next stop. Close to the cathedral are the slave chambers. From here we drive past a building which , during the first World War, was used to shelter the Germany Ambassador. Moving along the sea front one comes across the tower of Beit-El-Ajaib, the House of Wonders, an imposing structure along the sea front built by Suntan Seyyid Baragash for Ceremonial purposes. A stop is made at the old Arab Fort built in 1700 and the Peoples Palace which had been used by the Sultan from 1911 - 1964. One then proceeds to "Maruhubi Palace" ruins built by Sultan Baraghash for his 99 Concubines. The Palace unfortunately burnt down in 1899.
