Sub-Saharan Africa has so much to offer. Africa's offerings range from the vast plains of the Serengeti - reminiscent of a world long past, the Namib Desert with the highest dunes in the world, the beautiful Cape Coast, the awe inspiring majesty of Mt Kilimanjaro, and the miles and miles of unspoiled beaches lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Oceans. Africa also has a dark side, the severe poverty of her people. Africa's natural resources must play a major role in uplifting Africa's people. Sustainable eco-tourism involving the under-privileged can empower and uplift communities. Income from Tourism can help communities to educate their children, thus ensuring the prosperity of the next generation. The survival of many species will depend on Africa's people benefiting from conservation. The survival of endangered species depends on conserving numbers as well as their natural habitat. Africa's people traditionally live of the land, tending to their cattle and planting only enough crops sufficient for their family. Unfortunately subsistence farming often competes with conservation for land. Subsistence farming is extremely vulnerable to natural forces such as droughts and with an ever increasing population pressure people can no longer move around freely. The income generated by tourists visiting conservation areas is extremely valuable in a number of ways: park fees are essential sources of income for many African counties therefore contributing to essential services such as health care and education. Tourisms also generates valuable employment opportunities. We at African Safari Shop understand that for conservation to succeed, it must benefit local communities. We select our partners, bearing this in mind.
